  • Nurses end 'long, tedious' strike after deal with government

    Posted 2017-11-02 15:02:37 by: Administrator

A deal agreed upon by KNUN, the Council of Governors and the government has ended a strike that began more than 150 days ago. CoG Chairman Josphat Nanok (Turkana) said the agreement followed a lengthy consultative meeting within all stakeholders. They discussed the strike that began on June 5 and left many patients across the country stranded. The nurses were threatened with loss of their jobs and the council had warned the strike could completely cripple the health sector if unresolved. Negotiations hit dead ends when nurses refused to back down on the demands detailed in their collective bargaining agreement. Marches took place in many counties, nurses acknowledging patients' suffering but insisting the sector needed improvement. More on this: Nurses turn down governors offer to end strike, dialogue Also read: Governors call crisis meeting to end biting nurses' strike Nanok noted the industrial action was prolonged after it became the subject of "so many months of back and forth". "We have reached a consensus that the nurses will get a uniform allowance of Sh15,000 between 2018 and 2019, and that it will be increased by Sh5,000 over three years," he told the press on Thursday. Nanok added that the health workers will be entitled to Nursing Services Allowances of Sh23,000 which will be increased by Sh3,500 over the same period. "We have agreed that within 30 days, a CBA will be formulated and signed. The union's leaders agreed to call off the strike before close of business on November 3." The county chief said they also agreed to withdraw all salary cases from courts. "All withheld nurses salaries will be deposited in their accounts by end of November and all court cases related to industrial action withdrawn," he said. But Health CS Cleopa Mailu said the changes on allowances and uniforms will be factored into the budget for the 2018/19 financial year. Mailu said they all agreed that the ...

  • 213 killed in Nairobi accidents since January - NTSA

    Posted 2017-11-02 14:07:56 by: Administrator

At least 213 people, including 134 pedestrians, have died on 13 city roads since January, NTSA has said, citing vandalism and speeding. The National Transport and Safety Authority attributed the rising numbers to vandalism of guard rails, refusal to use footbridges, speeding and lack of pedestrian walkways.Thika Superhighway led in the number of fatal accidents in the city, the number being 31 people. Among victims of the accidents between January and October 29 were 14 pedestrians, two drivers and nine passengers, between Some 45 people died on the road last year.Mombasa Road, where 48 people died in 2016, came second with the deaths of 30 people, including 20 pedestrians and four drivers.NTSA road safety manager Samuel Musumba said the road has witnessed "the worst form" of vandalism of guardrails erected to keep people from crossing at wrong points."This is one of the busiest roads in Nairobi; vehicles plying both short and long routes use it. We partnered with different organisations to erect pedestrian fences but vandalism has been worst on this road."Musumba noted most roads in the city were built long ago so paths for non-motorised transport were not created."The population of Nairobi has grown. Vehicles have increased in number yet our roads are still the same as they used to be," he said on Thursday. "So you find both human and vehicle traffic that lead to the high number of accidents." Twenty seven deaths were recorded on Wayiaki Way, 20 victims being 20 pedestrians and two passengers. Musumba said most pedestrians do not want to use footbridges for various reasons and that they are knocked down while crossing roads."Some people say they are mugged on the bridges. Some say hawkers have taken over the bridges while others say the bridges are too old," said the safety manager. Most crashes have taken place on Kangundo Road, the Eastern Bypass, Jogoo Road and the newly built Outering Road .Some 22 people ...

"We have launched investigations to unravel the motiveRotich said police were deployed to pursue the attackers but that nobody has been arrested so far."It is still too early to say whether it is the Wakali Kwanza or Watalia gang," the police boss added.Coast regional police chief Larry Kieng warned against any plan to disrupt the election."Let those planning to cause chaos be informed that we are ready to deal with them. • Raila dismisses election as mockery, asks Kitui to snub UhuRuto

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has reaffirmed that NASA will not take part in the election as that "would reduce them to flower girls".Raila said this during a rally in Kitui town on Tuesday where he asked his supporters to "stay at home and not be part of the election mockery".Read: Stay at home on Thursday, don't protest, Raila tells supportersAlso read: 'It's his right': High Court throws out petition for Raila to face UhuruThe opposition team said they will stay away from the election pitting Raila against President Uhuru Kenyatta and five others. They said this is because their 12-point irreducible minimums to IEBC are yet to be met."The election will be a wedding for Uhuru and DP William Ruto. We cannot allow ourselves to be reduced to flower girls," Raila said. The rally, also attended by co-principals Musalia Mudavadi (ANC) and Moses Wetang'ula (Ford Kenya), was hosted by Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu.Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama and several MPs were present. Raila said the remarks of IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati and former commissioner Roselyn Akombe have made them jittery over the poll. The IEBC chair last week said he could not guarantee the country a free, fair, and credible election owing to political interference. And the Opposition said the situation where commissioners take orders from State House cannot assure them of a fair poll process."In our analysis of the annulled election, our IT experts said we beat Uhuru on August 8. We were robbed of our win by crafty IEBC officials," Raila said. "The NASA IT experts established that I had won with 8.5 million votes over Uhuru's 7.2 votes."The Opposition leader said he regrets that the impasse has delayed implementation of projects he had promised Kenyans."They have delayed our plans which we had promised to actualise after taking over leadership."The NASA fraternity promised free education from nursery ...

Mombasa High Court has declined to throw out a petition challenging Governor Hassan Joho's victory.Justice Lydia Achode said Joho failed to give proper reasons why the case should be struck out.The Governor wanted the case halted for not meeting threshold and flouting election rules. He argued that the petitioner, former Senator Hassan Omar, failed to enjoin the deputy governor as the two positions are inseparable. The ODM county chief said that should his election be nullified, the deputy would take up the governor's seat. But Achode said the DG is automatically elected when the Governor is voted for so there is no need to enjoin him.She declined to give Omar time to amend his petition, saying it should have been done within 28 days after the winners were declared.Read: I'll win petition against Joho, says Hassan, tells Chiloba to ...

  • Selfies with animals is abuse, lobby says, wants new laws

    Posted 2017-10-24 13:16:25 by: Administrator

Kenyans account for 12 per cent of abuse meted on animals by taking selfies with those in the wild, research shows. The study by World Animal Protection noted the pictures are usually shared on Instagram. This trend that is viewed as 'cool' "is degrading the welfare of giraffes and elephants, which are the most common animals that Kenyans take selfies with", WAP communication manager Lucy Wanjiku told The Star on Monday."What we are saying is that if you touch an animal or feed it for the sake of taking a picture with them, then that is a negative selfie. Animals should be allowed to be in their own element."Taking selfies with animals is one of the common forms of abuse on wildlife tourism where tourists, with the help of tour operators, capture and share the images. This is seen as exploiting the wild animals as photo props."What people do not know is the cruelty those animals have gone through to be able to take such pictures," Wanjiku said. In a bid to address the abuse, the organisation has launched an online petition to compel Instagram to ban selfies with animals. Instagram is most commonly used to share the pictures.Among emerging trends of abuse to wild animals include transporting them in poor conditions and using them for social events such as bullfighting and lobbying.Others are caging birds and housing exotic animals such as snakes. This has forced WAP to call for the amendment to the Prevention Against Cruelty Act. The Act drafted in 1962 has loopholes where the protection of animals is concerned. The amendments will look into animals in disasters, farming and entertainment."We need to note that the provisions of the Act are very old. The cruelty that happened back then cannot be compared to the cruelty happening now. The penalties will also be increased," Wanjiku ...
